BE PROUD, JITZERS. THE GUARD GAME IS ON A ROLL IN MMA!

Not long ago, people were questioning whether the closed guard game was dead in MMA.  Pretty sure we can put that goofy premise to bed now.

I'm talking about UFC 117 and the 5th Round triangle-armbar finish that Silva put on Sonnen.  Poetic, considering Sonnen disparaged the guard game in MMA as being less than manly.

But, not so. You saw what I saw and we all saw that jiu jitz is just as handy for crushing your enemies as face clobbering.  Couple that with Werdum's recent triangle submission over Fedor, and jiu jitz is on a roll!

So, walk tall, grapplers.  Now would be a good time to regale yourself in that $75 Koral hoodie you bought at Worlds and head over the local Starbucks to chat up the ladies with tales of your manly closed guard.

  1. I do walk proud, regardless. But am I the only person who thinks Anderson Silva just hung on for 4.5 rounds? Yes, thank God he got the triangle, and yes it was from guard.. but...

  3. Darn, I thought we were gonna talk about Matt Hughes choking Almeida unconscious.

That was a pretty interesting finish for Hughes. He desreves major props for connecting with the right and following up with that quasi-jiu jitsu-like submission. Nothing like squeezing the crap out of the head/neck/arm to choke a man unconsious.

  5. DSTRYR: That Hughes choke did look funny but Barnett broke it down the other day and it was sweet as.

  6. DSTRYR I remember when you used to do that as a white belt. Maybe even a little blue belt

  7. Very true, Alan Z. I finally grew up. Haven't squeezed the crap out of anyone's head in a while :)

  8. If only Matt Hughes could grow up and be half the fighter DSTRYR is.
