2011 IBJJF EUROPEAN OPEN: OUR PICKS FOR THE BLACK BELT DIVISION.
While Roger and Jacare both fight in Strikeforce this weekend, the world elite black belts converge on Lisbon, Portugal to compete in the the 2011 IBJJF European Open Championships, an event both Gracie and Jacare have won in the past. If there was such a thing as the Majors (PGA) or the Grand Slams (Tennis) for the world of elite grapplers, the Europeans would be the first of such events in the year. Most of the top-tier, pro-level black belts compete in this event, and it is a reliable indicator of what's to come for the rest of the year in the other major tournaments (i.e., Pan Ams, ADCC, Brazilian Nationals, World Pro Jiu Jitsu Cup,Worlds [aka Mundial] and World No-Gi).
One goal at DSTRYR/SG is to help bring greater awareness to the top-level black belts in our sport, in order to assist in it's growth. It's important to remember that BJJ and submission grappling, in their current states, are still young sports that are developing quickly. Help us bring glory to these badass athletes who essentially train full-time for these competitions.
Check out our picks (and thoughts) below, and let us know what you think! We, of course, are infallible (not).
