A BIT OF THE ULTRA VIOLENT OLD SCHOOL.

Long before the Gracie brothers were selling juicers and making smoothie videos, guys like Renzo Gracie were doing battle in violent Vale Tudo (or NHB) events.

It's good to watch material like this to really get an appreciation for what it is we do in our sport.  It takes you back to the basics - before the midnight orders for $180 lavender-trimmed Shoyoroll gis and the 10-minute 50/50 guard wars ending in one-advantage victories ... when it was just about the effectiveness of the jiu jitsu and the challenge of proving that.  I'm not saying we should go back to that era, just that it offers us some perspective.

Below is video of Renzo's 1992 fight versus Luiz Augusto Alvareda (almost 2 years before UFC 1).  It was Renzo's first official fight as a professional.  It's certainly been a while since I've seen this and it's always beneficial.  Watch repeatedly.  Take it all in and then go train with conviction, grappler.

  2. Did his opponent tap at about 3:11? It seemed like Renzo just let go of the Ezekiel choke and looked at the ref like it was over.
