POOR MAURO. YOU GOT TOLD ON NATIONAL TELEVISION.

This past Saturday at Strikeforce Challengers 14, Mauro Ranallo, the enunciative Canadian  commentator who also calls pro-wrestling matches, came up a bit short during the Carlo Prater/Bryan Travers fight by repeatedly calling the wrong submission.  You see, Carlo slapped a brilliantly executed anaconda choke on Travers (who was choked unconscious), but Mauro mistakenly called it a D'arce or brabo.  Admittedly, these chokes are in the same stable or family of triangle chokes.  But, it's like someone calling your pet weasel a ferret or the crown jewel of your Gobot collection a Transformer. Yes, it's an easy mistake to make, but definitely something to be avoided.

I'm not going to lie.  Mauro's bad call turned me off quicker than I turned off my last date when I told her I was unemployed and still living with my Mama (I swear it’s not as bad as it sounds). Granted, it's a common  mistake to make and Mauro never claims to be an expert in grappling terminology. But, c’mon man.  The guy gets paid actual money to know what he’s talking about. He could stand to do a little more research (or, better yet, training).  It's OK though.  In the end Carlo Prater dropped some knowledge on Mauro during the post-fight cage interview.  We're going to look at this as a teachable moment for Mauro and remind ourselves that at least he's not the guy that says "Good Night Irene."

In the end, I just hope (1) this creates an opening for Pat Militich to get more air time (the man knows what he's talking about) and (2) Carlo Prater continues to put his BJJ and Luta Livre black belts to use putting more guys to sleep with each Strikeforce event that passes.  You can watch Prater's mind-blowing anaconda choke again here.

  4. Schiavello is 8,000 times the comentator that Mauro is. Lost major credibility there.

  5. Schiavello know his stuff. I'm still not keen on the "Good Night Irene" bit.

  7. He does it because Irene is his lady. It's a little "I love you, even though I spend most of my time watching sweaty men grapple"
