WALK BEFORE YOU RUN, GRAPPLER. THE BASIC OMOPLATA AND YOU.

While successful execution of the Omoplata is somewhat rare in MMA, it’s vital a fighter knows it. This type of shoulder lock is a basic move in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other grappling arts and can be used to establish other types of attacks from the closed guard such as the triangle, arm bars, sweeps, et cetera. You have to master the basics before you can string your offenses together and “ABC” (Attack By Combination), as it’s called in Jeet Kune Do.

So here’s a video on how to perform the basic Omoplata from the guys at BJJ4MMA.com. This method of trapping the arm is much easier in no gi grappling, thus is perfect for MMA. Years ago, Frank Mir used this method to get the Omoplata on Tank Abbott in UFC then finally submitted the “Pit Fighter” with a Figure 4 Toe Hold from the shoulder lock. Again, the Omoplata is great as a bridge to other attacks. Use it.
