Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeida recently announced his retirement from MMA. You could look at it as a loss to MMA, but I see it as a big win for BJJ. We get the talented faixa preta back.
I always liked Ricardo and his fighting style. He was a bit old school and focused primarily on the submission game in MMA, like others of his generation. I liked that, although we all know it's less and less beneficial to fighters to focus on one discipline. The increase among fighers in well roundedness and balance among stand-up, wrestling and submission/ground skills is changing MMA rapidly.
Check out this very candid interview with Ricardo regarding his decision to stop fighting and his plans for the future.
Oh, and welcome back to BJJ, Big Dog.
