YEAH, ED O'NEIL'S A BJJ BLACK BELT, BUT HE DOESN'T TALK MUCH ABOUT IT.

If I had a Shoyoroll gi for every time someone asked if "Al Bundy really trains BJJ," I'd have like 7 or maybe even 8.  And, they'd be the ultra pimp kind too.  I'd where them while I do crazy breakdancing-type, improvised moves on you and I'd catch you ultra low percentage submissions (the kind black belts put in DVD instructionals solely to show off).

I'm just messing with you, grappler. I'm all about the high percentage stuff.  But, yeah.  Ed's a bona fide BJJ faixa preta by way of Gracie Jiu Jitsu (Rorian Gracie).   In fact, our academy (my coach and many of my teammates, including me) goes way back with Ed and BJJ for a good 10+ years.  Ed's a humble dude and a great ambassador for BJJ, even though he's pretty private about his involvement in the sport.

He recently spoke a bit about his GJJ roots on episode of the relatively unknown Fox Sports show, Barfly.  Sorry, grapplers. No "Big'uns" jokes here, just mad respect for the man.

Here's a little bonus vid, featuring Ed and Chuck Liddell.  Good stuff.

  1. As a 42 year old 3 stripe purple, Ed's an inspiration. To be hitting the mats at 65 is something I hope for, but at my current DaysTraining:InjuriesSustained rate I don't see it happening...

I really wish they would have spent more time on his experiences w BJJ. A 16 year journey deserved more time.

    Thanks for putting this up.

  2. So Ed started training at age 50 or so? That is awesome. Like the above poster I also am a 40plus bjj guy(blue). On a visit to Rio I met a 73 year old black belt who trains and looked like he was in his 50s. That is my aspiration also, slow and steady and just movement.
