Maybe your were still an aspiring beach volleyball player or rhythmic gymnast back in '99 or maybe you were like 12 years old. Either way, if you weren't watching NHB (now MMA) back then, you might have missed out on Frank's legendary and storied career. It was great time for MMA and Frank was at the top of the heap. And, back then, people were watching MMA for the pure love of it. It wasn't particularly cool to be in to it and definitely the chicks weren't digging it. The fighters didn't go on Leno or get profiled on TMZ (which didn't exist, of course). Overall, it didn't get a ton of attention like it does now. It was just pure awesome, and it was great.
Frank Juarez a/k/a Frank Shamrock is a special fighter to us here at DSTRYR/SG. He bridged the gap between Japanese CACC style hybrid fighting, complete with a legit submission game, and what a lot of people now consider to be modern MMA. And, he won in dramatic fashion. Many people only know him by his most recent fights from later in his career. That doesn't do the man justice. He's a legend.
Now, check out his recently release HL reel. You'll see what we mean.

I remember watching Bas front kick him to pieces.
ReplyDeletebest martial arts video i've seen this summer
ReplyDeleteAgree. Great video and a great post. It's bittersweet remembering back when the UFC was something you often could only watch on a VHS tape...
