Not too long ago - maybe even within the past 1.5 - 2 years - we wouldn't have featured a match between two non-black belts in BJJ. But, look at us now. And, it's due almost 100% to the combination of Paulo and Joao Miyao and Keenan Cornelius. And, these guys were purple belts not more than a couple of years ago (we even wrote about Miyaos as purples).
There is no doubt about it - innovation in our sport has come from the ranks out of the tournament/competition style. The rise and prominence of advanced De La Riva guard and berimbolo techniques are in large part connected to these brown belts (along with Rafa Mendes, of course). So, what I'm saying is, if you're not getting all upside down on a daily basis, you're style is dated and sad.
That's enough props giving and big upping for now. Let's see how Paulo Miyao handled himself at the Brasileiro (i.e., the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals) this past weekend.
