In 2012 the Japanese Government implemented Judo as part of the school curriculum nationwide. Since then they have seen a steady increase in injury with students. Judo was implemented despite the fact that over 30 years at least 114 students have died and more than 261 have been injured for life while practicing the sport.
Now some people would look at those statistics and cringe and others would suggest staying away from Judo or traditional martial arts altogether. As with anything in life there are risks and rewards, and in all contact and combat sports there lies an inherent danger. With the proper training, instruction and equipment, injuries and death can be minimized and safety and awareness increase. Some may question the possible dangers vs benefits of martial arts, but the fact remains that there benefits far outweigh the dangers.
